The Peoples' Movement for the United Nations
UNANZ works to educate New Zealanders about the activities of the United Nations and its agencies, New Zealand's involvement, and how to get involved. We are committed to the ideals embodied in the UN Charter and the crucial role of the UN at the centre of multilateral cooperation to promote world peace and justice, and to eradicate poverty and hunger. We recognise that the UN has far to go to achieve its objectives, and arecomitted to its improvement. We are involved in a number of activities including forums, speech awards for school students and Model United Nations events. A current focus is working together with others to raise the importance of finding ways to achieve the Millennium Development Goals , Global Security and UN Renewal .
2005 is the 60th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. It marks the culmination of recent research into achieving the Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals, alleviating Poverty and achieving Peace and Security.
This focus has led to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's recommendations to governments for UN Renewal encompassed in the report "In Larger Freedom: Towards Development, Security and Human Rights for all" www.un.org/largerfreedom . Government's will vote on that renewal package at the General Assembly in September 2005.
We also offer a window to the world and into the United Nations for your own interest or research and provide links to other United Nations System websites and related sites.
UNANZ is a non-government organisation and an approved charity made up of volunteers. We have branches, a youth association ( UNYANZ ) and affiliates across New Zealand There are many ways you can be involved, from taking on an active role to being a member and occasional supporter.
