 UNANZ Speech Awards Minimize

Traditionally, UNANZ runs an annual high school speech competition, involving schools across New Zealand and major UN related issues. It has become one of the highlights of our year, and cumulates in the regional branch winners being funded to attend our National Conference, to compete on a national level.

The topic for 2011is yet to be decided.

Why you should consider competing:

  • Participants speak on a UN related topic for 5-8 minutes.

  • The judges normally are from toastmasters, UN association members or other topic experts and helpful feedback is given as well as prizes awarded.

  • The region winner participates in the national finals which are held on Day 1 (May 7th ) of our National Conference - this year held in Wanganui.

  • Regions provide financial assistance to enable participants to travel to the conference.

Tauranga Winner - Katrina Jackson - Saturday, April 17, 2010

Tauranga had their speech awards Tuesday 16th - what a powerful combination of presentations. First was Katrina Jackson (Acquinas), second Kate Ross-McAlpine (Tga Girls') and third Tessa Morgan, (Rotorua Girls High).

They highlighted the dramatic dominance of military over humanitarian expenditure, a situation that seems to be getting worse. This commitment to the military is driven by basic human instincts of the survival of the fittest, it is also a theft from the poor which is actually undermining our security.

Much was said about the waste due to military expenditure, and how much better the world would be if that money could be used for making a better world, and particularly for addressing poverty. The Millennium Development Goals, aimed at addressing global poverty, are far from achievement, largely due to the lack of money.

The Role of the P5, the five key powers on the security council, was critical. They had the money, the arms, and they set the example. Is it just an issue of power, position and pride? Pursuit of national interests, such as oil? There are many promises made in the UN - words are cheap - but where is the action? Many valuable UN programs had to be curtailed through lack of funding.

The environment is also critical, being a potential source of conflict, yet being degraded by our military emphasis. And so also were human values and spirituality, which were being degraded by the threat of annihilation.

And what are the solutions? Some of the speakers suggestions were that the UN must act, its members must live up to their commitments, we must promote genuine security, adopt value-centred economics and use our resources in the best interests of mankind.

The speeches were assessed by Susan Northey, Bridget Paton-Tapsell and Jim Carruthers.
