International Day of Democracy 2026

Today, 15 September, marks the International Day of Democracy 2026.

Democracy is strongest when every voice counts, here in Aotearoa and around the world. Governance systems work best when people have real opportunities to influence the decisions that affect their lives, through dialogue, collaboration, and a genuine effort to understand different points of view.

Marking the day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the importance of bringing people together across societies to enrich decision making, build trust, and create more peaceful, inclusive, and resilient communities.

For over 20 years, the UN Democracy Fund (UNDEF) has backed civil society, inclusive participation, and stronger institutions that uphold human rights and the rule of law, funding more than a thousand initiatives around the world. From grassroots communities to youth led movements, UNDEF's work has helped people shape their own futures through civic engagement and democratic innovation, especially in places where democracy is fragile or under threat.

UNA NZ is committed to keeping that dialogue open here at home, connecting New Zealanders to the UN's work and to each other.
