International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples
9 August 2026
Happy International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples!
Here in Aotearoa, we understand this through mātauranga Māori, a knowledge system built on values like kaitiakitanga (guardianship), manaakitanga (care and respect for others), and whanaungatanga (connection and kinship). These values echo what Indigenous peoples everywhere have long understood: that people, land, and community are deeply interconnected.
From protecting biodiversity to preserving languages and stories passed down through generations, Indigenous communities everywhere have shaped our world in ways that deserve more than a single day of recognition.
Let's commit to learning the histories of the lands we stand on, supporting initiatives led by Indigenous communities, and listening, today and always.
